Working in Denmark

Have a cup of (cultural) coffee with another IDA member

You've probably been told that in Denmark, you need to network and get to know Danes. But how do you actually do it and why is it so difficult? As a member of IDA, you have the opportunity to drink a cup of (cultural) coffee with another IDA member and learn more about (the weird) Danes and Danish society, as well as get insight into some of the written and unwritten rules you might be facing.

What can you expect?

You may already have heard about IDA’s coffee meetings for new graduates, aspiring managers, and experienced members looking to share their knowledge. A one-on-one with another member is a great way to find out more about the specifics of a particular career path or industry.

But what if you just wish to expand your knowledge about Denmark and Danish society in general, and get to know more about the written and unwritten rules of Danish (workplace) culture? Let us arrange a cultural coffee meeting for you!

Questions you might have could be: Why are my Danish colleagues openly disagreeing with our manager at team meetings? Why does my manager ask me what the best solution is instead of just telling me what to do? A coffee meeting can be a way for you to ask just the right questions about what you are experiencing and might have a hard time understanding. It is an informal setting with a voluntary IDA member who wishes to share their own perspectives and help you understand Danish culture and society.

If you register for the coffee meeting, we will match you for one coffee meeting with another IDA member who has more experience in Denmark. It could a native Dane or another international, who has valuable perspectives and tips/tricks to understanding Danish (workplace) culture. It is not a long-term process, but solely an agreement of a one-time meeting to learn more and share valuable experiences.

What is expected of you?

When you are matched with another IDA member, you are expected to be the proactive one. You must establish contact, send proposals for meeting times and prepare for the meeting. You can either meet in person or virtually depending on what is possible for the IDA member we match you with.

As part of the offer, you will receive a number of tips & tricks that you can use in your preparation. It includes, among other things, good advice for networking and inspiration for questions you can ask.

How do you sign up and what is the process like?

Register by filling out the form in the link below. You will receive a confirmation, which will also state when the next round of coffee meetings starts - and when you will hear from us. If we find a good match, you will receive a match email where you are introduced to each other. Here you are asked to contact the other IDA-member and arrange a cultural coffee meeting.

We will do our best to match you mainly based on location and interests, but if we cannot find a good match, you will also be informed by email.

We hope that you have the time and desire to meet for a cup of coffee.
