Webinar: Mines and Conflict in South Sudan
Listen to the human and academic insights into conflict, violence, state formation and demining in South Sudan – and the practical experiences demining in this environment. This webinar will be conducted in English.

Program

17:00 Introduction to the size and scope of humanitarian demining in the world and a presentation of the subject to be discussed by moderator Juliane Marie Neiiendam, member of the board of IDA Global and the Danish Demining Group.

17:10 Richard MacCormac, Director for Danish Demining Group, will showcase different types of mines and explain how demining is carried out in South Sudan. He will frame it in the context of how mines impact anxiety and hunger in the country.

17:40 Peer Schouten, senior researcher at DIIS, will give a historical narrative of the conflict dynamics in the region and share from his field experiences in South Sudan.

18:10 The audience can post written questions during the event which Kristine Zeuthen Jeppesen, member of the board of IDA Global, will manage and pose.

18:25 Wrap up by the moderator.

Presenters

Richard MacCormac is the Director for Danish Demining Group, Danish Refugee Council. He will tell us about their work on reducing anxiety and hunger in Leer Country, South Sudan. Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a humanitarian demining group under the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Denmark is known and respected around the world for its expert knowledge about demining. 

Peer Schouten is a senior researcher at DIIS and an associate researcher at the International Peace Information Service in Antwerp. His research interests include, among others, conflict dynamics in volatile environments; the role of business in peace and conflict; mineral extraction and conflict economies; conflict and climate change; and the politics of logistics and infrastructure. He has extensive field experience in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan.
