The rise of the “New Space” industry (and SpaceX in particular) has led to a multiplication of objects in orbit around Earth. This growth also increase the risk of collisions between both active satellites and debris from earlier launches.
Collisions of even small objects, can have fatal consequences as orbital speeds are measured in km/s. In the crowded low-earth orbits the risk of a chain reaction where a collision leads to debris that leads to further collisions is a potentially devastating risk.

As with air traffic, there’s a need for traffic control in Earth orbit. This “Space situational awareness” (SSA) is important to both governmental agencies as well as private actors (launch providers, satellite operators and insurance companies).

Weibel has for decades built highly capable instrumentation radars that are capable of tracking minute objects at high velocities. This capability led NASA to acquire a number of Weibel systems after the Columbia space shuttle disaster, to track any debris during launch.

In this webinar we will explore the growing need for Space Situational Awareness from both a governmental and a commercial perspective.
