New international standards for energy efficiency of systems on board ships
The maritime industry in Denmark has identified a need for standards in the field of energy efficiency of marine systems and equipment.

The maritime industry in Denmark has identified a need for standards in the field of energy efficiency of marine systems and equipment. The Danish Maritime Fund supports a three-year project where Danish manufacturers and shipowners work together on defining the future requirements. The project is headed by Danish Standards. Efficiencies of marine systems are hard to compare on an objective basis. This project will help in pinpointing relevant criteria for benchmarking use and ultimately aims at reducing the CO2 footprint thereby assisting shipowners in addressing the requirements of the SEEMP and the UN SDG´s.

Programme

16:30 - 16:35 Introduction and welcome by Valdemar Ehlers, Danish Maritime

16:35 - 17:00 Developing a future-proof standard for maritime energy efficiency by Ditte Klint Heede / Per Velk, Danish Standards

Danish Standards have together with Danish Maritime and Reflow Maritime initiated he process of creating a new international standard for maritime energy efficiency in ISO, with funding from the Danish Maritime Foundation. This presentation will give an overview of the steps needed to ensure that the proposal for the new standard is approved in ISO and the steps Danish Standards intend to take to build international support for the proposal. Danish Standards will also present the draft scope and format of the new standard and how the new standard can be used across a range of maritime systems.

17:00 - 17:30 A manufacturer´s view by Jens Fich, Technical Director, C.C. Jensen

17.30 - 18.00 The benchmarking challenge of ships carbon intensity and the NICE project by George Panagakos, Senior Researcher DTU Department of Technology, Management and Economics

The ongoing discussions at IMO with regard to a short-term measure on the carbon intensity of ships are indicative of the challenges that decision makers face in this area. While realizing that both technical and operational aspects need to be considered, their attempted combination through EEXI and CII is a difficult puzzle. The NICE project of DTU, also funded by the DMF, aims at developing a methodology for addressing this issue through a new richer indicator that could be used for standardization purposes.
