CO2-Negative Capture or utilization from existing and/or new back-up Oxyfuel Biomass Power Plants.

On this conference day IDA Energi will highlight how biomass is sustainable, how CO2 from utility plants is a prerequisite for large scale eFUEL/SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) production and how the plants in parallel can support the grid through fast ramping operation in condensing mode de-coupled from heat supply. Grid support is ever important since vital intercountry transmission lines are at stake – last the Norwegian development.

We need to look into how we succeed building up the renewable system in a new integrated tendering hub perspective with EPC consortiums covering the whole system chain in one proposal from behind the meter wind/solar coupled directly to electrolysis and succeeding eFUEL production on CO2 from preferably oxyfuel utility plants working in condensing mode backing-up the grid through fast ramping operation at the same time working with intermediate storage of CO2 for eFUEL/SAF production.

Actually, one could ask: Is Oxyfuel technology the overlooked technology supporting the grid – not in the plans today?

  • Sustainability of biomass is in question. Focus will be on how and when it is sustainable fuel. The important conversion of biomass district heating from boilers and utility CHP to electrification through preferably heat pumps can release the necessary amount of sustainable biomass for advanced back-up and production of biogen CO2.
  • In Denmark there is a growing recognition to how sustainable biomass power plants with their rotating mass are important for keeping stable grid frequency and back-up the grid – in particular after recent winter weeks in ”Dunkelflaute” (No wind and solar).
  • Through BECCS they will be carbon negative by reducing the atmospheric content of CO2. Conversion by BECCU climate neutral CO2 re-emits to the atmosphere through electro fuels (MeOH and SAF) or stores in possible products of plastics etc.
  • Applicable technologies to BECCUS can be Amine-/and potassium carbonate capture processes or new power/-boiler plants based on oxyfuel technology.
  • Due to high and increasing Nord Pool Prices back-up from e.g. new oxyfuel based 400 MWe power units only needs 2.500 to 3.500 operating grid following hours a year in condensing mode to create a viable business plan – especially if a planned new capacity mechanism is introduced. Nord Pool spot price has over a year on average been above 1.000 DKK/MWh in DK2 for more than 3.000 hours.
  • BECCU is also a route to chemicals – thereby storing CO2 in products.
