Fire (safety) at sea

Fire (safety) at sea
Fire at sea is a hot topic - especially now with both the use of battery power for propulsion and with the carriage of batteries at sea, as the emerging risk of a battery fire is becoming an increasing concern for the maritime community.

The potential danger which lithium-ion batteries can pose, whether in battery rooms for propulsion, inside electric vehicles or transported as standalone cargos, including the risk of a battery fire if they are not handled, stored, or transported correctly, is a very relevant hazard and even more so while at sea onboard ships.

The above challenges plus many others have considered in the recently published reports of DBI’s ELBAS (Electric Vehicle Fires at Sea) and the CARGOSAFE study (addressing how to develop new proposals to reduce the risk of fires on container ships) carried out by DBI. Regulators and class are also working on new guidance, recommendation, and regulations for best practices in the area, such as the Lloyd’s Registers Rules for Ships .

Come and hear about the conclusion and recommendations of ELBAS and CARGOSAFE, how battery projects are handled by Class as well as hear latest developments in battery fire safety in maritime industry and gain insight into this challenging area.

Program

17:00 - 17.05 Welcome & Introduction
by Alexander Bjørn Kleiman, past Chairman - IDA Maritim & Sr. Project Manager - Maritime, DBI – The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology

17:05 - 17.35 ELBAS - Electric Vehicle Fires at Sea: New Technologies and Methods for Suppression, Containment, and Extinguishing of Battery Car Fires Onboard Ships
by Alexander B. Kleiman, Sr. Project Manager- Maritime, DBI – The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology

The recently completed ELBAS project was conducted using advanced fire safety engineering combined with human element analysis and has increased awareness of the complexity of handling EV battery fires at sea.
ELBAS focused on identifying effective techniques and potential technologies and tools for handling such fires, which are directly implementable and affordable in the short-term. The results and conclusions from this intensive, solutionoriented project will be presented, and have contributed to the development of performance based holistic fire safety strategies for EV battery fires on Ro-ro ferries.
The DBI ELBAS project was supported by the Danish Maritime Fund.

17:35 - 18:15 CARGOSAFE
by Anders V. Kristensen, Sr. Project Manager - Maritime & Aqqalu Ruge, Project Manager DBI – The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology

Presentation of all the aspects including the final results and conclusions of the CARGOSAFE safety study performed for EMSA.
The objective of CARGOSAFE is to identify cost-effective risk control options for cargo fires, dealing with both dimensions of the problem both for existing ships and newbuilds, based on a safety risk study on containerized cargo fires.
The study followed the IMO Formal Safety Assessment MSC-MEPC.2/Circ.12Rev.2 which also includes a review of the study by FSA experts.
In addition to presenting the study, DBI will share the experiences and knowledge gained from the FSA Experts Group review, which took place at IMO during late October this year.

18:15 – 18:40 Break

18:40 – 19:20 Fire Safety – Batteries for Propulsion
by Jacob Munk Plum, Lead Surveyor, Electrotechnical Systems, Lloyd’s Register
Lloyd’s Register will give a brief overview of the current battery rules for ships, and present how those have been applied in a real conversion project, the ForSea ferry TYCHO BRAHE and the related discussions on fire safety.

19:20 – 19:30 Questions & Answers and Closing
by Alexander Bjørn Kleiman, past Chairman - IDA Maritim

The event is in collaboration with Danish Society for Naval Archite3cture Foundation and IDA Maritim & IDA Fire Technology.
