Since the 1800s, rare cases of individuals becoming cancer free following oncolytic virus infection have been recorded. This presentations is focused on how we can turn these viruses into an improved cancer treatment for patients.

Remember the COVID-19 pandemic, where one virus virtually shut down the whole world?
Unfortunately, the corona virus has given viruses a bad reputation, but Madalina Carter-Timofte, Assistant Professor at Aarhus University, is here to change our minds about that.
Oncolytic viruses are viruses that specially target and kill cancer cells, and they hold great potential as cancer cures. Madalina's research is focused on how we can combine oncolytic viruses with different drugs, to make sure that the action of the oncolytic virus is safe and kills only the tumour cells, while leaving healthy cells untouched.
In the laboratory, she has tested over 1,000 drugs to find out which one can increase cancer cell killing the best way. Now, she would like to test this combination in patient derived material, so we can better understand the potential of this method as a new cancer treatment.
