Join us for an in-depth exploration of the engineering and impact of batteries in commercial maritime shipping. This seminar will examine how batteries are now making their way into broader segments of the shipping industry and the consequences of this movement. Program: 17:00 -17:15 Welcome
17:15 - 17:45 Designing safe battery installations onboard a maritime vessel from an engineer’s point of view by Erik Lisber Borum, OSK Design
During the design of a vessel many points need to be considered, Erik will have a walk through the following points during his presentation:
- Why install batteries onboard a vessel?
- A few interesting rules and regulations when installing batteries
- Challenges with new buildings compared to conventional vessels
- Challenges with retrofit projects adding batteries or replacing diesel engines with batteries
- Risk assessments, principles and how they can help improve the design
17:45 - 18:15 Electrified operation of a danish ferry by Henrik Hagbarth Mikkelsen, senior officer, MARNAV and Niels Haastrup, Maskinmestrenes Forening, R&D manager, FMS
Learn more on Ærøfærgernes Ellen's battery bank and the upcoming total battery replacement, as well as the Maritime Battery Life project. And get an operational insight into the tasks, responsibilities and competence requirements for engineers on board.
18:15-19:00 Break with sandwiches
19:00-19:30 Batteries fire safety - a walk through by Anders V. Kristensen (DBI)
The number of used lithium-ion batteries continues to increase as they are incorporated into more and more products and means of transport. Statistically, the risk of fire in lithium batteries is low, but if a fire does occur, it can be both complicated and prolonged to extinguish – and in worst case, develop explosively.
In this session we will explore topics related to battery technology developments and fire and explosion safety. We will also present results from our recent project BESAFE on battery explosion hazards, focusing on testing and mitigation measures.
