The new academic year at VinIDA will kick off in the grandest wine-producing country of them all: France. We naturally all love Burgundy and Bordeaux - they are classics for a reason. But as their prices rise with unprecedented global demand for the most famous French wines, there are still parts of France where great deals can be found.
It is time for the lovers of Burgundy to look at the rich whites and elegant reds Jura and the Loire Valley, and for those enchanted by wines from the Rhône Valley to have a second look at Languedoc. Bordeaux, which long limited the commercial potential of inland vineyards across South-West France by controlling the traffic on Garonne and Dordogne rivers now stands to lose against standouts from Cahors, Madiran and even Marcillac.
The past two decades have seen both unprecedented transfer of knowledge into the less famous regions - and climate change helped (some of) them along as well. Regions previously disregarded merely as suppliers of cheap wine for Parisian bistros and local auberges can now compete with the greats on quality - but not on price.
We will do two kinds of tasting pairs. First, we will compare the most classic of classics against regional up-and-comers so you can judge their relative quality for yourself. Beyond that, we will also discover a few regional classics every French sommelier loves but can be hard to sell at the wine store. You will also get a little cheat sheet, telling you what to expect from different grapes and regions across the forgotten France.
This tasting will be presented in English by Dr Janice Wang DipWSET and Domen Prešern DipWSET.
This tasting is open for everyone, but as we sometimes will be very detailed, it does give a better experience, if you have some basic knowledge of wines. A good help is to study this "cheat-sheet" kortlink.dk/2pdep and kortlink.dk/2pdfs, to get a basic understanding of wines, their appearance, aromas, flavours and structure.
The presentation will be in English
