Just behind France and Italy, Spain is the third largest wine producing country in the world. But because Spain lags behind in terms of image there are still plenty of deals to be found, and because Spain has long lagged behind in terms of economic development many regions only now seem to be reaching their full potential. It also means great deals can still be found there.
While the renown of classic regions like Rioja and Ribera goes back to the 19th century and Sherry is written about by Shakespeare, most Spanish wine regions only started making a mark in the consciousness of the wine world in the last 30 years or so. Fresh zesty whites from Albariño and Verdejo have made their mark, going from obscurity to consumer favourites. Long disregarded Garnacha has been reinvented from a cheap bulk wine into everything from muscular Priorat to elegant Pinot-like high-altitude Navarra. Varieties like Mencia and Hondarrabi Zuri went from being made into simple wines for local consumption to being made into complex, mineral-driven fixtures of tasting menus in Michelin-starred restaurants.
If most of those went over your head don’t worry – you will taste a curated selection of Spanish wines, and we will also give you a roadmap to the landscape of Spanish wines as it exists in 2024, and give you confidence to navigate that section of the wine store yourself. We will use the familiar classics as a foundation and add the developments from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s to that. All of that interspersed with a healthy dose of history, geography and winemaking culture.
This event will be presented in English by Domen Prešern DipWSET and Dr Janice Wang DipWSET. Janice is also one of a handful certified FWS Spanish Wine Educators outside of Spain.
This tasting is open for everyone, but as we sometimes will be very detailed, it does give a better experience, if you have some basic knowledge of wines. A good help is to study this "cheat-sheet" kortlink.dk/2pdep and kortlink.dk/2pdfs, to get a basic understanding of wines, their appearance, aromas, flavours and structure.
The presentation will be in English.
