Come and hear about Rokus audio signal processing as well as optimizing the perceived performance of audio in products. Roku's focus is presently on improving audio performance on TV speakers and soundbars. The presenters will talk about this technology.

Roku is proud to present Jan Abilgaard Pedersen, who is a audio specialist and former President for AES, as key speaker at this event. From Roku we have Frederik Halkjær, Kasper Andersen and Rob Curtis presenting, who have all been important players in Roku to obtain the great audio performance in our products. The event will be in English.

About Roku: Founded by Anthony Wood, Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Today, Roku streaming devices are used by millions of consumers in North America, Latin America, and parts of Europe. Roku is the No. 1 TV streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico by hours streamed. Roku makes TV's, streaming players, wired and wireless audio products, and recently also started a Smart Home (IOT) portfolio. Roku Denmark contributes to many of Roku's products - both on software, hardware and acoustics. The embedded software in Roku's products is mainly C++ and many of our colleagues are strong C++ programmers.

Below are brief abstracts for the presentations:

Sound quality in TV's

Frederik Halkjær and Kasper Andersen from the Audio Technology team in Roku will talk about the science behind audio tuning of TV's. Audio tuning is about improving the perceptual experience, however the perceived audio quality is a target within the subjective domain and the tools to manipulate the sound is within the objective domain. How do we measure subjective audio quality and how do we relate it to objective quantities? A predictive model, the data behind and some of the findings that can explain the preferences for sound quality in TV's will be presented.

RokuDSP:
Rob Curtis will talk about RokuDSP. RokuDSP is a signal processing framework developed by Roku specifically for audio processing. It makes heavy use of modern C++, strong types, and template metaprogramming to achieve a set of goals. In this presentation we explore the architectural considerations and tool choices that balance performance, portability, code reuse, and maintenance within the context of audio signal processing.

Adapting Loudspeakers to Your Listening Room
Jan Abildgaard Pedersen is a well known specialist in the science of adapting a loudspeaker to its acoustic environment. The perceived timbre of any loudspeaker is highly dependent on the physical size, shape and acoustics of the listening room. Jan is going to share different approaches to solving this complex and multidisciplinary main problem of loudspeaker playback in rooms.

Location:
  • Auditorium, Roku Denmark, Hedeager 44, DK-8200 Aarhus N
  • Date: Thursday 19th September, 14:00
