We welcome you to join the Nordic Drinking Water Biofilm Symposium 2019 in Horsens, Denmark! The focus will be on having time to meet others for deep discussions: to generate new ideas and solidify our vast base of existing knowledge in order push the boundaries of research in drinking water biofilms. And we want to have a relaxed and enjoyable time while we do this, so there will be dynamic poster sessions, exciting prizes and fun social activities!
Scope of the symposium
This symposium is focused on the science and practices surrounding wanted and unwanted biofilms and biological growth in drinking water, from treatment to the tap. Biofilms can significantly influence the quality of drinking water that is delivered to consumers both due to processes in the treatment plant and interaction with the water in distribution systems and in household plumbing. This can include changes in biological treatment, the role of biofilms in harboring and releasing microorganisms and impacts on chemical aspects of water quality.
Technical program
Our confirmed Key Note speakers for the symposium are:
Dr. Isabel Douterelo, The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom
Dr. Frederik Hammes, Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology
In addition, 15 high profile invited speakers has also accepted their attendance in the event. Our current list of speakers come from Norway, Finland, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Netherlands and Denmark.

Message from the organizers:
Our general observation is that there is too many meetings and conferences right now with too packed programs and not enough time for interactions among scientists, industry staff and students. We therefore came up with the idea of this event that will follow these few simple principles:
* The first part of the symposium will start with some basics for students to capture the idea of the topic
* There will be enough time for networking and discussions around posters
* We will discuss real problems from the field with the staff working with the plants/assets everyday
* The focus will be on pros and cons of biofilms in the drinking water system from the well to the tap
* It will be relatively cheap for both students and senior staff to participate
* The event will have a social aspect that will make an informal atmosphere
Therefore: “Let’s set aside some time to focus on the details, discuss our latest scientific findings, meet old friends, and make some new ones in a casual academic atmosphere”
We are looking forward receiving your abstract and seeing you at this event – save the date already now!
Kind regards,
Dr Torben Lund Skovhus, VIA University College
