Lightning and Transient Luminous Events

Lightning and Transient Luminous Events

Program:

  • 19:00 - 19:10 Velkomst ved IDA SPACE

--------------------Eventet er på engelsk/the lecture is in English---------------------------

In 2015, Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen captured an exceptional phenomenon from the International Space Station (ISS) - a surge of profuse blue discharges in the upper layers of a cloud. These extraordinary "blue" flashes, now known as BLUEs, sparked a wave of curiousity among researchers and photographers. Since then, scientists have been captivated by these upper atmospheric events occurring in the stratosphere, which are part of the mysterious family of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs).

Inspired by this discovery, the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM), led by DTU Space, was launched aboard the ISS in 2018, providing a unique opportunity for the systematic monitoring of lightning and TLEs on a global scale.

Building on this momentum, DTU Space is now pushing the boundaries even further with groundbreaking neuromorphic technology for future lightning and TLE imaging from Space. In the 2023 Thor-Davis project, a neuromorphic camera is being tested to observe lightning and upper atmospheric discharges from cloud tops during Andreas Mogensen's Huginn mission aboard the ISS. This exciting research is further investigated by the Neuro-Lightning project, funded by the DFF Sapere Aude program, helping us unlock the mysteries of these fascinating phenomena.

Senior Researcher Dongshuai Li from the National Space Institute (DTU Space) works daily on analysing lightning and TLEs from ASIM and developing new algorithm and technologies to improve the accuracy of ground- and space-based detection systems, aiming to unveil the physics of lightning and TLEs despite their extreme nature.

IDA Space invites you to an evening at the forefront of lightning physics research. Don't miss out on this exceptional chance to expand your horizons and ask all of your burning lightning-based questions!
