Introduction to thermoplastic composites

Introduction to thermoplastic composites
This course will thoroughly explore the emerging field of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics – or thermoplastic composites – , a new class of materials that expands the possibilities of fiber reinforcement in polymers.
While traditional composites involve a thermosetting matrix like epoxy combined with continuous fiber reinforcements, continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics utilize thermoplastic matrices to overcome major challenges such as complicated low-rate processing, high cost, safety concerns, and recyclability issues. The outstanding combination of high reinforcement levels and efficient processing makes these materials excellent contenders against conventional materials like metals.

Participants will learn how thermoplastic composites offer reduced cycle times, inherent recyclability, and opportunities for hybridization, leading to lighter, more durable, better-performing and cost-effective parts across a variety of industries, including automotive, consumer goods, electronics, oil and gas, aviation, and defense.

Seminar scope
The course will cover the multifaceted nature of thermoplastic composites, guiding participants through:
  • their theoretical foundations, building on classical fiber reinforcement theory and highlighting the key roles of fiber type, length and interfacial interaction
  • the various product forms available on the market, emphasizing the influence of reinforcement architecture on material properties
  • the design, processing and recycling possibilities brought along by this class of materials
  • the methods available for hybridization with other reinforced plastics – such as overmolding and joining techniques – to maximize their economic and performance benefits
  • the vast application potential, illustrated by concrete use cases across industries
Key learning outcomes
By attending this course, participants will:
  • gain a comprehensive understanding of how continuous fibers reinforce thermoplastics
  • discover the various product forms available and their inherent advantages and limitations
  • investigate crucial factors influencing material selection, including the matrix polymer type and fiber characteristics
  • learn about the influence of ply stacking, anisotropy, and loading conditions on material performance
  • explore advanced processing methods such as tape laying, filament winding, stampforming and overmolding
  • develop strategies for integrating composites as local reinforcements in parts made from traditional reinforced plastic materials
  • learn about typical applications and specific benefits of utilizing thermoplastic composites and hybrid parts
  • understand current market maturity and projections for future adoption of thermoplastic composites technology
Target audience
Aimed at technicians, engineers, scientists, and managers, this seminar welcomes anyone eager to delve into the rapidly evolving field of thermoplastic composites, discovering their unique attributes, applications, and processing techniques.
