Future Building Materials - Mycelium fungi and Eelgrass

Future Building Materials - Mycelium fungi and Eelgrass
A sustainable building industry requires new materials. The fungi Mycellium and Eelgrass are two of the possibilities. Presentations by Phil Ayres, PhD. Professor of Biohybrid Architecture, as well as architect and CEO of "Søuld", Tobias Øhrstrøm.
What should we build with in the future?

Mycelium - a fungal material

We will hear from Professor, Phil Ayres, from the Royal Danish Academy's Institute of Architecture and Technology. He works on a project that wants to explore the possibillities of using the fungi, Mycellium, as a building material in the future. He has been part of taking the first steps towards biofabrication and implementation of fungal architecture. Maybe the future brings growing architecture and not just building it. There are also possibilities in making new construction approaches to mycelium-based composites.

Eelgrass - Acoustic and insulation products

The CEO, Tobias Øhrstrøm, of Danish material manufacturer, Søuld, will tell us about how they are committed to providing eco-friendly, recyclable and CO₂-storing building materials made from eelgrass.
Eelgrass’s use in construction dates back to the 1600’s, when settlers of Læsø island would forge thick roof-thatching for their ‘seaweed houses’. Søuld’s work represents a passionate reinvention of Denmark’s forgotten seaweed house heritage.

Søuld has excellent acoustic and thermal comfort, effective humidity regulation, long-term durability, high fire-resistance and low susceptibility to mould and bacteria due to its naturally high content of mineral salt.

After a decade of research and development into the material, Søuld has emerged as an expert in eelgrass and is the first company to convert the material into CO₂-storing building materials that combine high acoustic performance, safety and durability with sustainability and modern aesthetics. Working together with local farmers, municipalities and ecologists, Søuld has
optimized eelgrass collection based on environmental protection and the preservation of natural eelgrass meadows.
