Cyber Security Workshop: "Under Attack"

Jens Myrup Pedersen is a professor in Cyber Security at Aalborg University, where he primarily researches within Network Security - Other than that he is the national coach for the Danish Cyber Championships. 

The first part of the workshop will be a presentation by Jens on the threat landscape. The current cyber threat landscape level is high, and this affect both companies and the individuals: to protect ourselves against the threats, we have to understand who is attacking, and how are they attacking. 

After Jens' presentation, SAMSIK (Styrelsen for Samfundssikkerhed) will present their board game "Under attack".

By the end of this game, you should have been discussing:

• (Cyber) Threats, and how a company’s vulnerabilities are exploited
• How to ensure security in a company by implementing mitigations
• How a company is affected by a cyber-attack, based on the threats/vulnerabilities, as well as how this affects the user, the company, and the society.

You will act in a specific company, with a specific threat landscape. However, there are different types of threat scenarios that can hit the company. Your team will have to consider the vulnerabilities of the company and make decisions together on how to defend yourselves against the incoming cyber threats.

As a team of 4-6 people, you must calculate the risk based on probability and impact and then prioritize how to apply resources to build a better defense – perhaps, you can successfully defend against the incoming cyber-attacks, based on your choice of mitigations. If the resources are not well spent on appropriate mitigations, the cyber-attacks will have consequences for the company’s production, economy and/or reputation.

The goal of the game is to highlight the risk management process, to understand the constant threats within the topic of cyber security.
