Business Process Management is an established discipline that deals with the identification, discovery, analysis, (re-)design, implementation, monitoring, and controlling of business processes.
In turn, the Internet of things (IoT) is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity enabling these objects to collect and exchange data. Up to now Business Process Management (BPM) and IoT have developed as two different fields with relatively few touch points. Undoubtably, a closer link between BPM and IoT bears substantial potential, but is not without significant challenges. In this presentation I will discuss benefits of a closer link of BPM and IoT along several application scenarios. Moreover, I will cover challenges that need to be addressed to better unveil this potential.
