When you become unemployed, you are likely to have a lot of things on your mind.

Here's an overview of how to secure yourself financially, whether you are member of an unemployment insurance fund, have a supplemental unemployment insurance, or neither of the two. You'll also get a few tips for getting started with your job search.

How to get unemployment benefits when you are unemployed

If you are a member of an unemployment insurance fund (A-kasse), you must register as unemployed on the first day of unemployment to receive unemployment benefit.

IDA does not have an independent unemployment insurance fund, but collaborates with Akademikernes A-kasse. They can answer questions about unemployment benefits, job centers and rules about having to be available for the labour market.

In order to get your unemployment benefit, you must comply with a number of rules. The rules may vary slightly from a-kasse to a-kasse, but at Akademikernes A-kasse the following applies:

  • First day of unemployment: You must register as unemployed at jobnet.dk
  • No later than 2 weeks after the first day of unemployment: You must create your CV on jobnet.dk
  • Ongoing: Every month, you must fill in a benefits card on MitAKA to be paid unemployment benefits.

How to use your supplemental unemployment insurance when you become unemployed

If you have taken out a supplemental unemployment insurance and have completed the required waiting period, you can receive a payout of up to 80-90 percent of your monthly salary.

You must contact your own insurance provider to request payment.

If you have salary insurance through IDA Forsikring, you must report your unemployment on your first real day of unemployment.

If you have become unemployed and are not a member of an unemployment insurance fund

If you become unemployed and are not a member of an unemployment insurance fund, it is assumed that you are financially able to support yourself.

If this is not the case, you may be eligible for cash benefits or education benefits.

To receive a benefit, you must:

  • First day as unemployed: Register as unemployed on jobnet.dk or at your job centre on the first day it is open.
  • No later than 1 week later: Attend an interview that your job centre invites you to.
  • No later than 3 weeks after: Create a CV on jobnet.dk
  • Ongoing: Check messages from the public sector, attend relevant job interviews, report when you have been to a job interview or applied for a job.
