Open-source simulation tools – opportunities and limitations

Open-source simulation tools – opportunities and limitations
Join Jørgen S. Dokken (Simula Research Laboratory) and Jack S. Hale (University of Luxembourg) as they examine the potential and challenges of open-source simulation tools, with a special focus on the FEniCS Project.

Open-source simulation is transforming how engineers and scientists tackle complex systems—but what are its real strengths and limits?

Numerical simulation has become an indispensable tool in engineering, science, and industry. From optimizing complex systems to testing innovative designs, simulation enables us to explore scenarios that would otherwise be too costly, time-consuming, or even impossible to test physically. Traditionally, commercial software packages have dominated this field, but in recent years open-source solutions have gained significant traction.

In this webinar, we will provide an overview of open-source simulation tools, with a particular focus on the FEniCS Project (https://fenicsproject.org). We will explore both the opportunities these tools create—such as transparency, flexibility, and accessibility—and the challenges they present, including usability and integration into industrial workflows.

The session will be led by two renowned researchers who have dedicated much of their professional careers to advancing open-source simulation:

  • Jørgen S. Dokken, Senior Research Engineer at Simula Research Laboratory (Oslo, Norway)
  • Jack S. Hale, Research Scientist at the University of Luxembourg (Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg)

Join us to gain a deeper understanding of how open-source simulation can empower innovation—while also learning where caution and critical evaluation are required.
