CANCELLED - On‐line Course - Basic water-steam chemistry

Vattenkemi kurser, hösten 2018 - Water Chemistry Courses, Fall 2018

Water Chemistry Courses, Fall 2018
Basic water-steam chemistry
SIAPWS offer two on-line courses in the fall of 2018, both focusing on water-steam chemistry and the monitoring of the water-steam cycle. The two courses are connected and there is a progression from the first to the second. The first basic course is intended to give an overview of the water chemistry and how it is controlled and monitored. It will be based on the latest VGB and IAPWS guidelines, but do not go into details of these standards. It is intended for chemist that do not consider themselves experts on the field and for operators that need an understanding and a focus of this area.

The form of the course will be a Skype session of 1½-2 h length. As usual there will be frequent, short breaks to ask questions or answer questions from one of the two organisers. Personal experience is also welcome in those breaks or may be discussed after the session also.

• Background for feedwater chemistry - short intro

• Conditioning - defining the chemical environment in the cycle

• Purity - monitoring the contaminants as a means to optimise the chemical environment

• Conditioning of feedwater - ammonia (or volatile amines)
o Relations between ammonia conc., specific conductivity, and pH
o All Volatile Treatment (AVT) and oxygenated treatment (OT)
o Oxygen - bad or good guy?

• Conditioning of boiler water
o Why do something special with respect to boiler water?
o AVT only - distribution of ammonia versus boiler pressure
o Phosphate treatment (PT)
o Caustic treatment (CT)

• The treats against the chemical environment - contaminants
o Salts
o Sodium hydroxide
o Organics
o Carbon dioxide
o Silica

• Monitoring - the means for controlling the chemical environment
o Conductivity - specific and acidic
o pH - measured or calculated?
o Oxygen - role in AVT and OT
o Sodium - indicator of salt contamination - poison to superheaters
o Silica - carry-over to the steam, deposition on turbines

• Monitoring and control in relation to conditioning - where and how?

• Monitoring in relation to purity - where and how

• Quality assurance in relation to on-line monitors - some advice
o Quality assurance - keeping track of the individual monitor, the logbook
o Quality control - making sure that the signal is reliable

• Assessment of on-line signals - action levels
o Concept of action levels - the means to graduate chemistry excursions
o Action limits - relations between action level and consumption of component life time
o Key and diagnostic parameters
o Examples for AVT, CT and PT conditioning

• Laboratory analyses
o The role of lab analyses in a world of on-line monitoring
o Quality control of on-line monitors, the guarantee of reliability
o Campaign analysis to document corrosion product levels
o Campaign analysis to document contaminant levels
