Emissions from shipping and the path towards carbon neutral shipping in a life cycle perspective

Emissions from shipping and the path towards carbon neutral shipping in a life cycle perspective
Join us for a meeting with the latest news and discussions about emissions from shipping in a life cycle perspective.

Latest news will be given from DTU, focusing on the potential of new fuel types continued by a presentation on the fundamentals of and importance of considering the complete life cycle when evaluating potential paths towards carbon neutral shipping, also by DTU.
The recently founded Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping will be presented, followed by a presentation by FORCE Technology on emissions of future fuels. Lastly, MAN Energy Solutions will provide a status on presently available carbon neutral engine technology as well as updates on the development of an ammonia engine.

Programme

16.30 - 16.35 Introduction and welcome By Philip Holt, MAN Energy Solutions

16.35 – 16.55 Presentation of Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping by Claus Graugaard, head of Naval Architecture (Onboard Vessel Solutions)

The presentation will discuss how the overall sector transition towards zero carbon shipping could play out, presenting some of the challenges and opportunities the sector is facing in the coming decade. Furthermore, it will discuss the Center strategy and exemplify which activities the Center is engaging in to help accelerate the transition.

16.55 - 17.15 State of the art – latest research at DTU on green maritime fuels and By Anders Ivarsson, DTU MEK, and Henrik Lund Frandsen, DTU Energy

DTU is involved in several green marine fuel projects both with respect to the fabrication of the fuels, the experimental investigation of combustion properties in engines and use in fuel cells. Few of the projects and a status of experimental capabilities will be presented. A special focus will be on ammonia, methanol and DME as fuels.

17.15 - 17.40 The importance of life cycle assessment for green fuels and shipping by Thomas Fruergaard Astrup, professor, DTU Environment

Life cycle assessment is more important than ever to quantitatively assess sustainability of maritime shipping. An assessment at different scales from micro-level (technology level) to large-scale (sectoral, national, global) is necessary to make the right decision.

17.40 -18.05 Emissions from the different fuels of the future by Karsten Fuglsang og Frantz Bræstrup, FORCE Technology

This presentation will review potential emissions from future sustainable fuels. What will be emitted from a ship engine fueled by e.g. ammonia, alcohols or biofuels? We know that total CO2 emissions will be reduced, but will new, harmful gases and particulates be emitted with the introduction of new, green fuels?

18.05 – 18.30 Engines of the future for new fuel types - Status on available carbon neutral engine technology & update on ammonia development by Michael Finch Pedersen, MAN Energy Solutions

Status on available carbon neutral engine technology & update on ammonia development. Existing main engine technologies with the possibility to utilise carbon neutral fuels for propulsion will be considered, such as methanol and LNG in the form of synthetic or enriched biofuel. Utilisation of ammonia as a fuel represents a path for carbon free shipping. The presentation will consider the challenges and considerations towards the release of a two-stroke main engine capable of ammonia operation, planned for release in 2024.
